Chapter One
Rook steals Mr. Calmbler’s treasured pot in order to join
the group of his new-found friends, Capp and Jasper.
Rook, Capp, and Jasper run from Mr. Calmbler’s prized Ifrisian
mastiff to their hideout, only to find the place already ransacked
by the dog, who is currently lying on their now torn sofa.
Rook, Capp, and Jasper spend the evening discussing the theft,
while their new friend the Ifrisian mastiff (whom they name Hoice)
sleeps on Capp.
Sadat and Vineth find the broken pot and that one of the dogs
is missing.
Calmbler helps a woman in need and moments later orders the deaths
of the ones responsible for the theft of his pot.
Vineth and Sadat discuss their plan for pursuit of the thieves.
Sadat visits his wife and sick son before going after the ones
who stole the pot.
Vineth forces a friend of Jasper to lead him to their hideout.
Vineth kills an innocent girl to provoke the thieves.
Jasper orders Rook to take their friend away while he remains
to fight Vineth.
Vineth is about to attack when Capp knocks him out with a shovel.
Jasper and Capp discuss what’s to be done with the Vineth
and the dead body when they are spotted by passersby.
Rook and the friend are running when Sadat, wearing a mask, attacks.
Rook fights with Sadat and finally runs away.

Chapter Two
Elana rescues a toad from two troublemakers.
Brond meets Elana at the river to escort her back to the city
to meet her father.
Elana’s father, Latu Torz, impatiently waits in the city
with Avatis and his father for Elana to arrive.
Latu hits Ricket and Avatis speaks out against him just as Elana
arrives, furious at her father.
Latu tells Elana that she is to marry Avatis.
Avatis and Elana are left to talk by themselves and Avatis reveals
he is not like either of their fathers.
Calmbler is distraught that his torture victim is dying and orders
his nurse to revive him.
Sadat reports to Calmbler that the thieves escaped.
Calmbler is irate and orders Sadat to employ the Shaman to find
them.
Sadat and Vineth discuss Calmbler’s sadistic methods.
Vineth accuses Sadat of letting Rook go. Sadat meets Tacklebox,
an old acquaintance, at the Shaman’s house.
The Shaman meets Vineth and Sadat with cryptic words, referring
to them as the Snake and the Ram.
Sadat presents the Shaman with Calmbler’s job offer to find
and kill the thieves.
The Shaman shows Sadat how he will use his Tartaran hounds to
find them.
The Tartaran hounds set out after the thieves.

Chapter Three
Rook dreams of Shilreth who warns him the dogs are coming for
them.
Rook wakes suddenly and tells his friends they need to hurry immediately.
Rook, Capp, Jasper, and Hoice set out in the night and Jasper
tells them his plan.
The four of them come upon some Undine ruins and find apples to
eat.
The Tartaran hounds find them.
The friends split up and the hounds follow suit to chase them.
The hounds attack Capp and Hoice.
The hounds attack Jasper and he is terribly wounded in a fall.
Capp, Jasper, and Hoice are surrounded when suddenly the hounds
break off.
Rook continues to run alone. When he comes to the swamp the hounds
give up their chase.
A strange mist surrounds Rook.
The Shaman peering through the eye of the Tartaran sees that it
is a zelnth the thief faces now.
Rook is helpless against the zelnth.
Just as the end is near for Rook, Paran kills the zelnth.
Capp and Jasper wonder where Rook has gone.
Capp and Jasper are attacked by an Undine stone guardian.

Elana tries to convince Brond to join her and Ricket on their
outing.
Latu curses Elana and orders Songbird to follow her.
Elana tells Ricket of her desire to be free of politics and war.
Rook awakes to see Paran cooking. He falls and hits his head when
he tries to walk.
Capp and Jasper are rescued from the stone guardian by an old
Undine man.
The man helps them with their wounds and they speak of the war.
Capp, Jasper, and the man see Ifrit infantry moving in the distance.
Sadat brings Calmbler the black box he requested from the Shaman.
Calmbler tells Sadat how he uses people’s loved ones to
control them.
Calmbler gives Sadat medicine for his sick son. Yellow mist comes
out of the box when he clicks it open.
Paran demands entrance into the Ifrit city Brager and kills the
guards when they bar his way.
Avatis comes to see Elana at her home to tell her he is leaving
for battle.
Rook is rescued by Eganzi and Calicoe.
Eganzi and Calicoe plan to take the troupe south to avoid the
Ifrit army.
